In 1985 a portion of the Bridge over Jacaguas River collapsed. The hydrological and hydraulic studies determined a new bridge, 45 meters long, was to be designed incorporating the following conditions: increase the bridge opening hydraulic capacity; a prestressed concrete voided slab type superstructure was necessary for the required low vertical profile of the roadway; reduction of the scouring of the abutments and piers by protecting the river bed with rip-rap rock; provisions of an open steel railing post along the length of the bridge to avoid obstruction to the flow of water for the possibility of a 100 year flood.
